CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

We materialized beneath the Eiffel Tower. The smell of fresh rain intermingled with the scent of iron and damp earth.

“Paris,” I breathed out, my voice cracking under the weight of my anxiety. “I always wanted to come here. I’d hoped it would be under better circumstances.”

“No time to see the sights,” Zoey reminded me. “We must remain laser-focused on the job.”

Achilles looked all around. “Such a strange world.”

“I’m sure it seems that way,” I replied. “But I appreciate your willingness to help save it.”

“Do not mistake my intentions,” Achilles reminded me. “My goal is to return to Troy and achieve eternal glory.”

I grunted, recalling the scene from the movie Troy when Orlando Bloom’s character struck Brad Pitt with an arrow straight through his heel. That was the fate that awaited Achilles once we sent him back. I swallowed hard. Achilles had accepted his fate a long time ago, millennia ago. What was meant to happen, had to happen.

“Listen,” I sighed. “We need to remember what Ennigaldi told us. We can’t kill any of these warriors. If we change history, there’s no going back.”

“Right,” Zoey agreed, touching the sigil on her wrist and summoning her scythe. “Kill the gods, spare the warriors.”

Achilles let out a mocking laugh. “Telling a warrior not to kill is like telling a hound not to piss on your leg.”

“This is why you’re here. Remember the deal with Athena. You help us beat Ares. Let us worry about the other warriors.”

Achilles bowed his head slightly. “As you wish. We’ll sit down a host of deadly warriors and ask them nicely to behave.”

I clenched my jaw, struggling to maintain my composure in the face of his sarcasm. This was too important for me to let Achilles’ dismissive attitude get under my skin. Though he didn’t care about the consequences, I couldn’t allow our mission to be jeopardized.

“Look,” I continued, forcing my thoughts into focus. “If we can avoid killing them, that will help preserve history. Remember, these warriors are just pawns in Ares’ game. The history that preserves your glory, and let me tell you, you’ve been featured in major motion pictures thousands of years after your death, is just as contingent on these warriors returning to their own times.”

Achilles tilted his head “What is a motion picture?”

I sighed. “Like a theater. But with much bigger audiences. The whole world can see the performance.”

Achilles’ eyes widened, pondering the implications of it all—how they preserved his reputation forever. “Intriguing.”

“And in anatomy textbooks,” Zoey piped up. “A part of the human body was even named for you.”

“It must be the heart. Perhaps a powerful muscle of the thigh!”

I grinned. I wasn’t going to be the one that the part of the body named for Achilles was named for his only weakness. “Something like that.”

“Fine,” Achilles conceded. “Maiming is just as easy as killing, and almost as fun.”

Athena, who had been silent up until this point, stepped forward. Her eyes were sharp and calculating, but her voice was measured and calm as she acknowledged my concerns.
